When it comes to usability, the context (how) and environment (where) people will use your product is crucial. When it comes to personal computers, whether boxes or laptops, the Windows desktop almost always is customized to fit the needs of the end-user. I myself have certain programs at the ready on my desktop as well as documents I need to freqently access.
Whenever you can make the product itself or another product all together portable and accessible, you leverage its usability significantly.
